Even now, the search for happiness is still largely associated with the search for money. With money, people assume that they have the power to do things and buy things that will make them happy. Thus happiness is associated with having the latest fashion, the best cars, the new cellphone model, etc. On the individual level this means high consumption. On the social level this means a culture of commercialism. On the corporate level this means unstoppable mass production. On the economic level this means unlimited growth. On the political level this would imply global domination if one has to continue this way. On the ecological level, this spells pollution, waste, global warming, total disaster. And when nature is destroyed all of the human race will go extinct as well. Thus this path of money is a dead end which will lead us all to doom. More and more people realize now that money can buy sex but not love. It can buy beauty but pollute your soul with vanity. Money can buy a house but not a home. It is time now that we rethink our values. Instead of acquiring more, wouldn’t it make us happy giving more. Instead of thinking about self, wouldn’t it make us more happy thinking about our less fortunate neighbors. Instead of high achievement, couldn’t we instead aim for high contentment. Instead of lavishness, couldn’t we aim for simplicity and frugality. Instead of working for money, couldn’t we instead work for fulfillment and love. Instead of producing for the market for exchange, couldn’t we instead produce for our needs. Instead of having more, we can have less but be more. Less eating would mean more health. Less stress more play. Less property, less worry and more peace of mind. If we can reverse our current direction, we might be able to give the respect we have so deprived of Mother Nature–return harmony to the land and maybe save our lives in the process….if its not too late
