Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “The final triumph of evil is when evil is masqueraded as good.” I cannot agree more on this point. It leads me into thinking, what are the things that are presented as good to us but is actually bad. Hmmmm. I can mention some. My best example of this is money. Money is presented as the end all be all of human existence in our present world. Money can absolve anything. It can make good what is really bad. It can buy almost everything. It is the modern idol. We worship it and give all our lives for it. But in the end, it was not able to buy us love, and friendships, and peace of mind, and even health. Money can buy a house but not a home…Christ said, “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but suffers the loss of his own soul.” Power is another thing. People would do anything to be in power. It is presented as the ultimate good. Because with power, you can do anything. Yet as the old adage goes, “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Yet there are still many things that are presented as good such as infant milk formulas, instant processed foods with a lot of preservatives, television that takes away your imagination, candies that destroy your teeth, animal meat that destroys your health aside from the violence involved….ahh the perils of this modern world.
