Richard Bach once said, “What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls a butterfly.” It is really amazing how life can show its surprises. An egocentric caterpillar who does nothing but eat and destroy plants will eventually turn out to be a butterfly. But before that he will have to undergo the crisis of his whole being and identity–he will stop eating, he will stop moving and begin to be wrapped in hard fiber as if all of his life will be snuffed. He will become an immovable pupae for a time–before he emerges as totally transformed butterfly! What a metamorphosis! What an amazing turn around! What a beautiful surprise! I hope that the problems that we are experiencing today will lead us to a turn around of this magnitude. That we are selfish caterpillars today but will eventually become beautiful butterflies to tomorrow. That we will eventually realize our ultimate destiny as a human being–resplendent and full of love. But we will have to go through a struggle to do this–a crisis—a pupal stage.
