Selenium is a miracle supplement, acting as an anti-viral, blocking cancer, relieving anxiety and helping to detoxify the body. However, taking excessive quantities of selenium is dangerous so care must be taken to consume less than 1000mcg per day. Consuming 1000mcg or more of selenium daily has been known to cause an increase in malignant tumors, raise serum cholesterol levels and even result in premature death. Selenium is easily obtainable from natural sources. One shelled Brazil nut contains about 100 mcg of selenium. It is also available in grains, garlic, sunflower seeds, particularly tuna. If you eat inadequate amounts of these foods, you may need to supplement with at least 100 to 200mcg of selenium every day. Natural intake of selenium has been known to be safe up to 500mcg daily.
