Anxiety, Depression, and unmanaged chaos affects more and more people. What if there was an answer, a solution, or tools that could give you resolution. I went for over a year with disrupted sleep. There are a lot of diagnoses or labels I could have been given. There were even more pills I could have taken to bandage the situation. The truth was I was on a dark journey, one into the depths of my soul and reality. For months on end I got no more than 45 minutes to an hour of sleep. I was regularly ripped out of my sleep or dream from my chest. I spent so many months not being able to catch my breath.

What was happening to me was a daily and at times hourly questions. Until I had a powerful conversation with a deep voice within that told me I was expecting a disrupted nervous system. One that came from my personal “dark night of the soul,”. I didn’t have titles or definitions for what was happening I just knew I couldn’t breath and I was drowning in air. Then it happened…I heard Michelle breathe!!! Deeply breathe… stop holding your breath waiting for the fear to materialize!! Enough is enough, you know you’re creating this, all of this in your bloody head! You can manage and redirect your thoughts with your breath. Then you will retrain your nervous system and return to a beautiful knowing and balance.

I spoke of the Shanti Sound at 8010 E. McDowell Rd., Suite 213 Scottsdale, AZ 85257, in a previous article. How I had a powerful sound bath with an incredible Breathwork master. Well let me introduce you to that master of breath, Ryan McBurney. His instructions were so powerful, I felt my body relax so deeply from the sound that was vibrating through his breath. He explained the importance of breath and the technique we were going to be practicing. The session was amazing, but the after effects of deep restorative sleep was profound! No meds or expensive doctor bills for me were needed. I needed to remember and be taught how to breathe. I still catch mycells holding their breath. Now I have a deeper connection and a new connection to my breath that allows me to integrate my thoughts that disrupt my nervous system.

Hi Ryan, tell me a little bit about yourself and what led you to breath work?

I grew up playing sports, my Dad was my football coach, and I ended up tearing my ACL playing football in college. After quitting football I had a bit of an identity crisis and this was intertwined with an existential crisis as well.

I was feeling lost, slightly depressed, and uninspired. Then in 2015 I learned about Breathwork and tried it without any expectations and it BLEW ME AWAY. I felt like I discovered the best kept secret in the world. 

Little by little as I dove deeper into my practice I noticed my energy, my happiness, and my life changing. Within a year or two, my life path became clear. I committed to sharing the power of the Breath with as many people as possible.

How long have you been?

I’ve been teaching since 2017 and have learned through my own exploration. I studied the Wim Hof Method, SOMA Breath, and learned directly from my mentor Dan Brule. 

Why is breathing so important and what experiences have you had with the practice? 

The Breath is so important because it is so fundamental to every level of our being (physical, mental, emotional, & spiritual). The Breath is purification of Mind, Body, and Spirit. The Breath is the only thing we do unconsciously and yet also can take conscious control of at will.

I’ve had the biggest breakthroughs, most profound realizations, and the most clarity from deep Breathwork sessions. The places I’ve gone and experiences I’ve had from the Breath top ANY experience I’ve had with psychedelics. I’ve noticed a higher level of conscious awareness and presence that allows me to enjoy life to the fullest and unlock my full potential.

Are there breathing practices we should avoid, especially on a daily basis?

There are a myriad of Breath practices and I always err on the side of intuition in terms of knowing what is right for you. Practices like Rebirthing, Holotropic, etc. are amazing and generally safe…but for individuals with PTSD or history of heart disease for example…I always suggest erring on the side of relaxation. There are many contraindications and I’m happy to answer any questions if someone reaches out. 

What service do you provide?

I offer my services-person and/or virtually… I host group Breathwork classes, 1 on 1’s, couples Breathwork, & private group sessions/workshops. I also have a Breath Fundamentals course, Breath & Self Mastery Mastermind program, and a practitioner program for anyone looking to add a new skill to their repertoire and become a Certified Breath Master.
