Hello everyone,
In recent years, I’ve been trying to live more sustainably, and while there’s so much information out there on how to go green, I often felt that it would be expensive or difficult to implement many of the suggestions. But over time, I’ve learned that living sustainably doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money—it can be about making simple, small changes that add up over time.
I wanted to share a few practical tips that have helped me live more sustainably without breaking the bank:
1. Meal Planning and Reducing Food Waste: One of the most impactful changes I’ve made is becoming more
mindful of food waste. By planning my meals for the week, I buy only what I need, which helps cut
down on unnecessary waste. I also started freezing leftovers or repurposing food scraps to create
new meals. For example, vegetable scraps can be used to make broth, and overripe fruit can be turned
into smoothies or baked goods.
2. Upcycling and Thrift Shopping: Instead of buying new furniture or home decor, I’ve started exploring
secondhand shops, thrift stores, and online marketplaces. It’s incredible what you can find—and it’s
a great way to give items a second life instead of contributing to the demand for new products. I’ve
found everything from vintage furniture to barely used clothes, and I’ve saved so much money in the
process.
3. Making Your Own Cleaning Products: Commercial cleaning products are often full of chemicals and come
in plastic bottles. Over the past year, I’ve started making my own cleaning solutions with basic
ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. It’s simple, affordable, and much better
for the environment.
4. Switching to Reusable Items: Instead of constantly buying disposable products, I’ve gradually
replaced them with reusable alternatives. I use a reusable water bottle, beeswax wraps instead of
plastic wrap, and cloth napkins rather than paper ones. It’s amazing how much waste we can eliminate
by simply changing the small, everyday items we use.
5. Energy Efficiency: I’ve become more mindful of my energy use by switching to LED light bulbs, using
energy-efficient appliances, and unplugging electronics when they’re not in use. It’s small, but
I’ve noticed a difference in my energy bills.
The key takeaway is that sustainability doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money upfront—it’s about shifting habits and making mindful choices. Little steps can make a big difference in the long run.
I’d love to hear from all of you:

Meal planning and cutting down on food waste has made such a difference for me too. It’s such a simple change but can really save money and help the planet. I’ve also started using more reusable items, like shopping bags and water bottles, and it’s surprising how much waste that cuts down. Thrift shopping is a game changer, too I found some awesome pieces for my home recently!
These are fantastic tips — I love it! I do quite a few of these, including cooking with whole foods that use less packaging, religiously shop at thrift stores only, and am very diligent with energy conservation. One thing I should do to reduce my carbon footprint is to make my own cleaning products. We have vinegar and baking soda, so we just need to get some essential oils! Thank you for the tips!
