An undisputed fact in positive psychology is the ‘happiness set-point’.
The idea is how happy you are depends more on you and less on your circumstances.
They researched folks who went through life-changing situations – some good, like receiving a windfall, and some bad, like losing a limb. At first, their emotions are all out of whack. But over time, things settle down.
The highs of success and the pain of loss eventually fade.
To some people, this is terrible. It means you’re trapped to feel like this forever!
Right… ?
Nah, because you’re thinking about it backwards. If your happiness is in your mind, that’s great! Your mind is something you can control.
And that’s the reassuring thing about the happiness set-point.
Sure, circumstances tend not to knock it too far off its normal settings.
But it’s not impervious.
What goes on in your mind is far stronger than what goes on outside it. So, sure, winning the lottery might not make you happier for long… but what’s cash compared to the power of your mind?
Happiness is your birthright, literally. When babies are healthy, fed and loved, they smile. It’s their default setting – unless there’s a problem, they’re happy.
We tend to lose that as we grow up. Most folks aren’t happy all the time, so we learn to do the same to fit in.
But you can unlearn that and relearn your native joy.
Because the same rules that babies abide by apply to you, too. Unless there’s a reason not to be, you’ll be happy.
So why aren’t you beaming all the time?
You’ve probably learned to fixate on the problems.
To dwell on your past mistakes and misfortunes.
And to fret about the future.
You might have done this so subtly, you never noticed you were doing it.
It was unconscious.
Now, you’re aware of it.
And bringing unconscious thought into conscious awareness is one definition of enlightenment.
But your work isn’t over. What’s left is for you to focus on happiness.
To make this the target of your affirmations.
To let yourself feel bliss and joy once more.
It’s not easy to unlearn a lifetime of bad mental habits. That’s okay, because the process is simple. Affirmations can be as easy as writing out what you want every day.
And through consistent attention, conscious practice can overwrite your unconscious patterns.
You can let go of all the baggage and feel your natural state of happiness.
There are two ways to do affirmations:
There’s the easy way, where you stick a note on your fridge and pretend it’ll work.
Then there’s the right way.
Affirmations aren’t a shortcut to better things. They take discipline and persistence. But I pity anyone who doesn’t sharpen their mind and focus every day.
Bliss is inside you, but it is not in a specific place. It is a state of being that you can access at any time. It is a feeling of peace, joy, and contentment. It is a feeling of being connected to something larger than yourself.
Bliss is not something that you have to earn or deserve. It is something that you are already entitled to. It is something that you can choose to experience at any time.
There are many ways to access bliss. Some people find it through meditation, prayer, or spending time in nature. Others find it through music, art, or spending time with loved ones. There is no right or wrong way to access bliss. The important thing is to find what works for you.
Once you find what works for you, make a habit of doing it regularly. The more you practice accessing bliss, the easier it will become. And the more you experience bliss, the happier and more fulfilled you will be.
Here are some tips for accessing bliss:
Be present. The first step to accessing bliss is to be present in the moment. This means paying attention to what you are feeling, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. It also means letting go of any thoughts or worries about the past or the future.
Relax. When you are relaxed, you are more open to experiencing bliss. There are many ways to relax, such as taking a warm bath, listening to calming music, or spending time in nature.
Be grateful. Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can help you to connect with bliss. Take some time each day to think about the things you are grateful for. This can be anything from your health to your loved ones to the beauty of the world around you.
Help others. Helping others is a great way to connect with bliss. When you help others, you are putting your own needs aside and focusing on the needs of others. This can help you to feel a sense of connection and purpose.
Do something you love. Doing something you love is a great way to access bliss. It can be anything from playing your favorite sport to reading a good book to spending time with your loved ones. When you are doing something you love, you are more likely to be present and relaxed, which are two of the keys to accessing bliss.
Bliss is a state of being that is available to everyone. It is a state of peace, joy, and contentment. It is a state of being connected to something larger than yourself. If you are looking for a way to live a happier and more fulfilling life, I encourage you to explore the ways in which you can access bliss.
