I think we should try to... not be preachy and judgmental. It can sometimes be very hard not to be this way and not to get angry when you are passionate about something, animal welfare in this case. I think you need to know what you're going to say before you say it, which means planning. It never goes super smooth no matter what but if you plan for it, it might go way better than if you just say what you have to say. Also try putting yourself in the shoes. Why are they doing that? How do they look at it? If you can't understand their reasons you won't be able to "talk" to them.
