Question:

I’ve catered for the last 6 years for a Buddhist retreat and I want to change up the foods that I serve them so that it would be more beneficial to their meditation and cleansing any suggestions?

Some great detoxifying Foods are:

Artichokes

Beets

Broccoli

Cabbage

Chlorella

Radishes

Seaweed

Spirulina

Cooked Quinoa (similar to oatmeal) w/ fresh fruit, vegan butter, cinnamon, and rice milk is a wonderful breakfast. My father who is an innovative physician and a nutritionist makes this nutritious dish nearly every morning.

Some healthy side dishes are:

Brown rice

Fermented Vegetables such as Kimchi

Sauerkraut

Onions, turmeric (curry powder), and garlic are healthy healing/anti inflammatory foods that help spice up meals. Ginger, olive oil, fax seed are also recommended because of their healing and anti inflammatory properties.

As far as beverages water in glass containers and herbal teas are wonderful.

Other considerations are to limit foods that would interfere with optimal brain chemistry and detoxification such as chemical additives, fried foods, saturated animal fats, highly processed foods, inflammatory foods such as dairy, and foods that many people have intolerances. The list below are the most common allergic foods which I would limit...these will cause an inflammatory response in individuals who are allergic to them:

Eggs

Peanuts

Tree Nuts

Milk

Fish

Gluten containing grains such as wheat

Soy

Shellfish

The following list are popular foods that many have an intolerance:

Dairy products, including milk, cheese and yogurt

Egg, particularly egg white

Chocolate

Flavor enhancers such as MSG (monosodium glutamate)

Food additives

Strawberries, citrus fruits and tomatoes

Wine, particularly red wine.

Blissings!
