Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that helps individuals identify, understand and change their thoughts and behaviors in order to facilitate better mental health. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are interconnected, and that changing one can bring about positive changes in the other two. CBT has been demonstrated to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and substance use disorders.

CBT focuses on the present rather than exploring past experiences or events. The therapist works with the individual to identify problematic patterns of thinking or behavior which may be causing distress, then challenges those cognitive distortions with more realistic alternatives. Additionally, CBT often includes exposure techniques which encourage individuals to confront fears or triggers in order to reduce their intensity over time.
