Zoos and Aquariums - A Moral Dilemma

I struggle with this one and was curious as to what others think. My kids love the zoo and I did when I was a kid. I think that it is cruel to relocate animals from their natural habitat and climate for profit. On one hand, it's educational, it's a nice family place of gathering and the zookeepers try to mimic the animal's natural habitat. On the other hand, they are caged, somewhat domesticated and have all these people staring at them. Let me know what you think?

Ths is really not hard to answer. Zoo is not anymore fun to go, because when you see all those wild animals being imprisoned in a place(indian zoo), that limits their movement to a large extent - it is heart breaking. At the same time, it seems as if they are safe from being the victim of human pleasure like hunting, poaching and so on.

I strongly disagree that zoo is the answer to protection. Its not!! A tiger or a lion would like to go for its kill rather than get a platterful of meal provided on time by the zoo keepers...lol

A forest reserve is a better place to keep the wild animals safe. What do you think?

There are some really nice forest reserves in India that make it possible for you to see tigers up close. Its quite adventurous, well scary too...if you are riding on an elephant and spot a tiger....

I used to love zoos as well as a kid because I loved animals so much. I loved seeing all the different animals.

but now it’s just sad. I understand if they are rehabbing the animals. Or breeding endangered species to release back into the wild(which is hard because they become reliant on humans). But other than that. Aquariums are a hard no. Making them perform and live in tiny tanks.

I have no problem with the zoo. In fact, putting them there is better compared to leaving them out in the wild with poaches. Again, human encroachment due to development and population increase is another factor to consider.

There are two perspectives on this thing, one is that if an animal is encaged just for the fun purpose and to showcase to the public to earn money then that is truly cruel and should be discouraged but there is a second way to look at this thing and that is the control growth and safety of endangered animal species. So in that case when the humans kill that animal to save their interests it's better to keep those Animals indoor and take care and save them to increase their numbers to a certain level before releasing them in their natural habitat.
