Iodine is important for the production of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones directly influence metabolism. Adding iodine to our diets can improve hypothyroidism, goiters and fibrocystic diseases. Iodine can also improve teeth, nails, hair and skin. Deficiency in iodine can lead to skin lesions, hypothyroidism, itching and rashes. Thyroid dysfunction can cause weight gain or loss, fatigue, goiter and dry skin. An easy way to add iodine to the diet is to use iodized salt. Iodine is also found in seaweed. Iodine supplements can also be taken but it would be wise to check with a health professional.
