Briefly tell us about your business or organization
Charlie’s Acres is a non profit animal sanctuary located in beautiful Sonoma County. We are dedicated to the care of rescued farm animals. We serve as a sanctuary where our animals can live out their natural lives in peace, and as a venue for showing the general public that these intelligent beings deserve our compassion.
How did your organization come to be?
I started the organization in 2016 with the intention of rescuing farm animals and allowing their voices to be heard. I started Charlie’s Acres after rescuing my chihuahua Charlie, from a shelter, and seeing how many animals need help and need their stories told, in order to make significant change in the world.
What would you like to see your organization accomplish?
We hope we can encourage people to build and broaden their empathy and compassion for all animals. We think by encouraging people to develop compassion for the animals and what they’ve been through, they will make positive choices in their impact on the world in eating, fashion, and how they treat others.
Why are you passionate about animal welfare?
I have always been passionate about animals, dogs and cats primarily, however I started developing my passion for farm animals about 6 years ago. I realized the negative impact that industrial animal agriculture has on the planet, our individual health, and the animals themselves, and wanted to try to make a change in the world.
What is the one thing you would most like to change about the world?
I would love to see people have more compassion for people and animals that are unlike themselves.
What impact do you want to leave on the world?
I would love to know that I helped people move towards plant based eating, reducing animal suffering and taking better care of themselves and the planet.
What makes you smile?
When I see animals playing together, like our piglets we rescued with their mother. Seeing animals happy always makes me smile.
What inspires you?
The animals who overcome trauma with such resiliency, and still have space to love humans and forgive inspires me.
If you were to create a perfect day what are some of the activities you would include for the itinerary?
I think a perfect day would include some sort of fun physical activity like swimming, tennis, or skiing, combined with good friends and family and a lot of happy animals running around!
If a doctor gave you only two years left to live, what would you do differently?
I would try to savor each moment and not sweat the small stuff as much!
Where would you most like to visit on an adventure and why?
I’d love to go to Antarctica and see the penguins at some point. I love the idea of an adventure combined with animals!
If you could go back in time and share words with your younger self…what would you say?
I would tell myself to enjoy the little moments in life a little more. That time moves quickly!
When do you feel most like yourself?
I feel most like myself when I’m surrounded by good family and friends, am engaged in something I’m learning/growing with, and am making a difference.
When your time here on this planet is over… what would you like people to remember about you?
I’d like them to remember that I stood by what I believed in and genuinely tried to make a difference with my full being.
