Many components are involved in weight loss. Genetics, eating habits, activity levels and body chemistry are just a few. However, all the major diet fads fail to mention toxins and their role in obesity. Currently toxins are a crucial element in fat loss.

Many toxins are fat-soluble and most contaminants that accumulate in our bodies do so in fat. For example fat-soluble vitamins essential for our function are toxic at high doses for prolonged periods because of bioaccumulation. On the other hand, water-soluble vitamins do not bio accumulate therefore; can be taken in higher dosages for extended periods with minimal injury to our bodies. According to a recent study, there are 27 to 130 toxic chemicals stored in human fat. There are now over 75,000 chemicals registered with the Environmental Protection Agency with only about 25% of those that have been through basic toxicity testing. Each year we add an average of over 2,000 new chemicals to our environment. With increases in chemical production every year, unless we take steps to limit exposure we can expect absorption of these toxins to rise as well. With these challenges escalating, it is imperative that we limit our exposure to these chemicals if we wish to remain trim, healthy, and energized.

An interesting study done with two groups of rats demonstrated toxins influence on obesity. One group they exposed to a pesticide while the other group was not. Both groups ingested the same quantity of food. The rats exposed to pesticides became obese while the other group maintained relatively the same weight. They even reduced the food given to the obese rats, yet this group continued to increase their weight while being exposed to the toxins.

According to James A. Ferrel M.D.CNC, the weight gain related to toxins is a combination of two factors:
1. Chemicals damage the body’s natural weight control (energy storage) mechanisms.

2. Fat absorbs many toxins in our environment contained in food, pesticides, personal care, household items, etc. In order to remove the toxins from the blood stream and protect the body from cellular damage, the body’s intelligence system calls for the manufacture of more fat. Toxins “jailed in fat” cannot do their potential damage.

One solution is to limit exposure to food chain toxins by selecting organic c such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, while avoiding food additives in the How To Read Labels Avoid List.

Other recommendations include the following:

Periodically cleanse and detoxify. A modified fast such as a juice cleanse is an effective way the help rid the body of harmful toxins. Choose organic fruits and vegetables and implement it monthly for 3 – 7 days. See a list of Natural Methods Of Cleansing for healthy cleansing options.

Three or four times a week visit a sauna. Sauna therapy can aid in eliminating toxins. Make sure to replace lost fluids and minerals shortly after.

Avoid pesticides in the house. There are many safe alternatives such as boric acid in closets doorways etc. Keep food cleaned up. Seal your home so that the bugs can’t get in.

Choose healthy personal care products that limit exposure to toxins. Burt’s Bees have a wonderful line of personal care products with little or no harmful ingredients. Remember that what you place on your body is absorbed through the largest organ of your body the skin.

Utilize natural cleaning methods such as using vinegar, orange oil, baking soda, and tee tree oil for cleaning. Earth Friendly Products have a fantastic line of cleaning products. When we clean with chemical cleaners, we are increasing exposure to toxins through inhalation of vapors and skin contact.

Limit the use of over the counter medications, and prescription medications unless your doctor says it is necessary.

Utilize an air purifier that does not employ ozone technology. Most purifiers use ozone technology which will clean the air but in a manner that is unhealthy for the lungs. This is why cities post ozone warnings.

Avoid meats. Most meats are packed with harmful compounds.

Invest in a home water filtration system and a chlorine shower filter to remove harmful chlorine vapors and other contaminants.

If you own a pool, utilize salt rather than chlorine. This will lower your exposure to chlorine a toxic substance.

Avoid air fresheners. Use natural oils and aromas for freshening the air.

Additional Considerations
While on any weight loss diet it is wise to take additional antioxidants to minimize damage from toxins that maybe released back into the blood stream.

By limiting exposure to toxins, and implementing effective cleansing and detoxification practices, we can expect to live a leaner, healthier and more energized life.
